MULTIVALENCE: EMOTIVE STATES # 3 (1997)
AUSSCHNITT (1997)
SECTION-SPACE-FOLD (1997)
“De la Transparence au Noir et Blanc: Jean Marie Delavalle & Yvonne Lammerich”, Galerie de l’UQAM, 1997.
MULTIVALENCE: EMOTIVE STATES # 3 (1997) resonates between two entities and is constructed of two 6’x 6’ abutting paintings. From their centres there are axial shifts that not only influence their own internal logic, but also that of the adjacent painting. A complex folding of the grid takes place that modifies the form of its original structure and creates the illusion of pictorial space. This folded grid structure is given a presence by the transfer or deposit of the material presence of paint.
In AUSSCHNITT (1997) (in German ‘cutout’) the normally painted grid has been replaced through folding back areas of canvas that mark this grid to leave a hole rather than black paint. The wall behind the painting has been painted black to create an illusory depth to the black grid on the surface on the painting.
SECTION-SPACE-FOLD (1997) is simply an empty white-painted corner including a V section of the floor. This resulted in the veiled appearance of the corner creating a near-illusion of an apparent wall surface with projective dimensions.
Note. At the close of the exhibition, once the AUSSCHNITT paintings were dismantled, the black-painted wall behind them registered finger marks, evidence of the curiosity arising from that sense of illusory depth – a register in other words of doubt and confirmation.

This exhibition presented GLASSWORK (1989); MTSZ (multiple time space zones) (1993) #2, # 3, # 4; and MULTIVALENCE: EMOTIVE STATE #4 (1994)
The works in MTSZ are based both on the height and reach of my body. The grid structure folds as a result of shifting the axis from my body’s centre.
