CAKE WALK (2000)

“L’AlgÈbra D’Ariane”, Labyrinth Gallery Dar Dar, Montreal, 2000.

The project “L’Algebra D’Ariane”, asked artists to present their work in selected spaces throughout the city of Montreal. My work CAKE WALK was initiated by the space I was given in the east section of the city. The space had housed an abandoned bakery in an old traditional Quebec stone building. The room in which I was to present my work had lost part of its wall surface, revealing its rectangular stone work structure, which reminded me of my earlier works based on a brick motif. I had the idea of building a wall of conventional rectangular commercial cake boxes. This seemed like a delightful opportunity to work the brick wall illusion in three dimensions. I painted the interior of every second cake box with colours similar to cake pigments that would give me the dark contrast and left the closed cake boxes intact to give the light contrast. In this way I was able to simulate the brick wall wedging illusion in 3D as well as pay homage to the history of this site.
