ISLAND (2006)

Each artist received a plastic double-wall shed structure as the starting point for this project. There were a number of sites provided from which to choose. I decided I wanted to make my piece for the pond just outside The Power Plant gallery. With Island, I began by perforating the shell of this structure with holes to create transparency. I eliminated the roof – just the shell remained as a sign for a sanctuary floating on the water. I fashioned a boat in the shape of a large paper boat, the kind that we learned to fold as children out of a flat sheet of paper. This boat with its folding became the imaginary vessel by which to reach the island or sanctuary.
